Westerly Creek Park is a sixty-six acre manmade nature preserve built along the former alignment of a drainage pipe and ditch that channeled stormwater runoff from the old Stapleton airport runways. The park has been sized and shaped to incorporate contributing stormwater from the surrounding Stapleton community and to accommodate Westerly Creek’s 100-year floodplain. Numerous stormwater Outfalls, Forebays, and Water Quality Ponds have been carefully designed to fit into the landscape and to become visual features within the native grasslands. The creek itself is designed to follow a sinuous alignment flanked by wet and dry meadows that help to dissipate floodwater and create a diverse wildlife habitat. Trails run continuously through the park connecting Aurora’s Westerly Creek trail system to the south, with Stapleton’s Greenways, and Denver’s Sand Creek trail to the north.
