The Kanesville Boulevard Pedestrian Bridge provides a safe crossing for school children at this busy state highway intersection. The steel girder bridge was constructed in the 1970s in a spare and utilitarian style, by 2005 the steel deck was rusting and the bridge was in need of structural repair. Working for a private foundation, and collaborating with the City of Council Bluffs, Chroma Design has suggested aesthetic improvements to add focus and elegance to the structure. The aesthetic recommendations include adding a 75 foot long signature steel arch; replacing the chain link fence “cage” with an ornamental fence over the roadway and railings on the approaches; painting the bridge using the colors of the city’s logo, new Council Bluffs signs, and the dramatic night lighting of the arch, signs, and piers.
