The MLK Boulevard Bridge is the largest new bridge at Stapleton and is a visual icon within the community. It crosses Westerly Creek Park, a 65-acre nature preserve corridor that manages all of the storm water runoff from the surrounding new community. The boulevard is one of the busiest in the area, and the bridge was identified in the Stapleton Bridge Master Plan as one of several “Primary” bridges that require special aesthetic treatment. MLK is actually a pair of parallel bridges and their arching steel girders, central pier, and cantilevered overlook have been designed to emphasize the bridge’s signature towers. The bridge is further integrated into its surroundings by the open meadow area between the bridge pairs and the stone-faced abutment walls that tie the structure into the surrounding high plains creek environment.
