The Greenway was the first park built at Stapleton, the 4400-acre urban infill community on the site of Denver’s former airport. The Greenway is both a critical open space trail connection and a 44-acre community park. Links to Aurora to the south, Denver’s Fred Thomas Park to the west, and Stapleton’s Westerly Creek to the east were all critical design criteria for the Greenway. The park design incorporates storm water quality ponds and channels that are richly planted with native species to create biodiversity and wildlife habitat. Park features include a children’s playground designed as islands in a stream, a boulder-climbing park, a skate skills park, picnic areas, and tennis courts. Play events were designed for all ages and both hard and soft surface trails link to all of the surrounding neighborhoods.
