Dreamland Pocket Park

Omaha, Nebraska

Through the 1930’s, 40’s, and 50s, Dreamland Ballroom was one of North Omaha’s most popular nightclubs. Located in the heart of the city’s African-American community, the club attracted such jazz greats as Dizzy Gillespie and Ella Fitzgerald. Dreamland Pocket Park was constructed on a site across the street from the former ballroom, Mr. Lamson conceived the design as an outdoor jazz club atmosphere. Striped paving representing musical stanzas organizes the space while water jets go off like notes on the musical score. A life-size three-piece bronze sculpture of a jazz trio enlivens the space and a performance stage with a high table and bar stool height chairs is used for summer neighborhood concerts.

This project was completed by Doug Lamson while employed by another firm.
