Catskill Point is a picturesque landmark on the Hudson River within a day’s cruise of New York City. At Catskill, the river is wide and navigable with forested hillsides, historic villages, and shining bridges. As part of a revitalization plan for Catskill Village, Chroma Design and Elan Planning and Design prepared a master plan for the two parks on Catskill Point. The design’s primary goal was to add an iconic theme to the point and create new spaces and uses that will add visual interest and utility to the existing wide-open landscapes. Suggested facility improvements include reorienting roadways, improving the boat launch, reorganizing and expanding parking, framing selected views, and redeveloping adjacent mixed-use properties. The plan seeks to artfully link up the pieces of the park and the surrounding village by extending trails, providing ‘leading’ views, and creating a sequence of experiences for the visitor. A ‘lighthouse’ form was chosen for the proposed thematic tower on Catskill Point.
