Abbott Drive is Omaha’s “Front Door,” it connects the city’s downtown with Eppley Airfield. This 3-1/2 mile boulevard was previously a desolate corridor through the city’s industrial core that included an oil tank farm, metals recycling yard, a rough and ready riverfront port, a lead smelting plant, and the Union Pacific Railroad yards. All but the tank farm have been vacated for new uses which include a regional arena and convention center, the world headquarters of the Gallup Corporation, and two new riverfront parks. Boulevard enhancements feature gateway towers designed after a well known 19th century post office, welcome to Omaha walls, continuous street trees, decorative paving, planted medians, and the “string of pearls” ornamental lights.
