Molecule Man Sculpture Plaza, Mid-America Center

Council Bluffs, IA

The challenge for this project was to site three fifty-foot tall ‘Molecule Man’ sculptures in a plaza to be viewed by over 100,000 motorists each day. A larger but otherwise identical art piece exists in Berlin and our clients were so taken with its impact that they requested the same sculpture to be fabricated at one-half scale for this location. The human forms are made from aluminum plates that are punched with holes to represent a molecular structure. The sculptor, Jonathan Borofsky, became fascinated by this molecule idea: “because of the simple fact that even though we appear to be quite solid, we are in fact composed of a molecule structure which, in itself is mostly composed of water and air.”
