Kaneko Sculpture Plaza, Mid-America Center

Council Bluffs, IA

Jun Kaneko designed an art space and garden for the Mid-America arena and convention center in Council Bluffs Iowa. The 20,000 square foot black and white granite-paved plaza contains 16 vertical ceramic “dango” sculptures, two art tile walls, and three heroic-sized bronze “heads.” It is enhanced with planted islands and granite seatwalls. The new space is a significant contributor to the art enrichment of this major public facility and to the citywide public art program that is being implemented by the Iowa West Foundation. Chroma Design assisted the foundation by taking over the project after concept design. Chroma refined the design detailing, prepared construction documents, and oversaw construction. Our objectives were to assure the highest quality and to fulfill Mr. Kaneko’s Vision.
